In 1975, Jaguar decided to expand its line of luxury motorcars to include 2 door coupe models. When introduced, they were labeled XJ6C and XJ12C respectively. The coupes were built under this designation from 1975-1977 and renamed in 1978 as the XJS. The XJC's were known as the world's fastest vinyl roof and were unique in their styling and complexity. A total of 8,378 were built under the Jaguar name and 2,030 under the Daimler nameplate. Daimler's versions were dubbed the Daimler 4.2 Sovereign and the Daimler Double-Six. These exhilarating coupes were rare in their day, and are especially hard to come by today. Motorcars
Incorporated of Plainville, CT created a one of a kind 1976 XJ6C that they have competed (quite successfully) with in the Jaguar Clubs of Southern New England autocross events. The modifications included suspension, brakes and a five speed manual transmission and the addition of XJR wheels. This car is beautiful and watching it take on the cones adds new meaning to poetry in motion.
As mentioned above, in 1978 Jaguar renamed these coupes "XJS" and this remained the only style until 1987 when they added the XJS Cabriolet to the lineup. In 1988 a third model was added, targeted for the sun-seeker, the XJS Convertible. In 1989 the Cabriolet was no longer
manufactured. The coupe and convertible were the models of choice until 1996 when Jaguar removed the coupe in preparation for its replacement.
In 1997, Jaguar came forth with one of its greatest accomplishments to date, the XK8. This truly was a work of art. It is also a work of remarkable creativity, engineering and uncompromised performance. A real drivers car that took the world by storm and gave other manufacturers a new benchmark to attain. These luxury coupes and convertibles were quick on their feet, aerodynamic and downright heart stopping. And in an effort to truly squash the competition, they added an "R" to the XK and blew the doors off of the sports car market. With 370bhp on hand, the rear of the car was the most popular view for other sports car enthusiasts. In the immortal words of Sir William Lyons: "The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive." Jaguar cars are not just a way to get there; they are a way of life!
